Shop for T56 rebuild

Post by EODJay » Tue Mar 17, 2015 8:21 am

In light of Clyde getting the tune for my 408 dialed in, I will soon need to get my transmission rebuilt. Is there a reputable shop in the area that can rebuild and beef up a T56? I'm good with bench work if it's cheaper.

I've considered this but aren't there several high dollar specialty tools required?

Rob recently send his T6060 to Tick Performance in Mt. Airy NC for a rebuild. They do quality work but aren't necessarily a cheap option.

I tried rebuilding the T56 in my C5 but still have 5th gear synchro issues (even with new 5th/6th gear parts) so I don't claim to be a manual transmission guy. If you decide to tackle it yourself I can lend you a manual and some online sources for parts.

By the way - if anyone on the forum needs bomb disposal assistance EODJay is the man to call. I haven't had to time to get good detailed stories from him, but I'm sure he has some. Good guy to know here. We have a little more to sort out with his tune using a wideband and then time for WOT.

edit - you do need a bearing splitter and a press to replace bearings in the transmission. Also need good c-clip pliars.

MJHoward on here is a higher quality fellow and mentioned he has/will rebuild them.

Tick was much more reasonable on T56 upgrades than TR6060 stuff. I would highly recommend them.

As Clyde said, and also a special puller to get the 5-6 cluster gear off. I've built about a half dozen T56's and I struggle with the reassembly if it's been 6 months or so. I'll put whatever you want in it for $400 labor.

I'll have to save this for later reference. Might come in handy.

Just to be clear, that is for trans rebuild only. I can pull it for additional $.
I'm currently working lots of hours. In about 3 weeks would be better for me.

I'm sure it is. But it's one of those things that if your half good at it you can do it 4 times faster than one that's never been there. Even for me, I'll have 8-12 hrs in a T56. Lots of inspecting, cleanup, hunting parts, and tolerances to check to do it correctly.

It may take me more than three weeks to be ready so this will work. Also, I will pull the trans, I'm pretty good at it. I've had to pull it more times than I care to remember. I will call you soon so we can work out the particulars.
