What Did You Do to Your Hotrod Today?

Post by vehicular » Mon May 11, 2020 9:02 am

I can't take any more COVID conversation. Post what you did to your car today.

I had a coolant leak on my daily (2000 BMW 540i wagon 6 speed swap) that turned out to be a pin hole in a heater hose, but it was spraying all over another common leak point. $300 worth of update parts to fix the common leak and the OTHER common leak nearby, plus another $200 of heater hoses, a PCV valve plate, injector o-rings, etc, I put it most of the way back together last night before I had to quit for Mother's Day dinner.

I also backdated to the earlier intake manifold that reportedly is good for significant power (15-25 claimed) and cleaned up a bunch of poop in the engine bay. Waiting on a throttle body flange plate from BMW and I expect to drive it tomorrow.

I planted a seed in my wife's brain about maybe getting a convertible in the future.
Thats about it.

Test drove the chevelle after the swap over to in-tank pumps. I also played with the PWM controller and tweaked the custom circuit board i put in front of it. The result is:

1) key on = pump at 100 % for 5 seconds, then switches to low mode at 25%.
2) low mode is from 0-2000 RPM.
3) medium mode is 2000rpm until 80%TPS and the pump is at about 65% duty cycle.
3) full tilt boogy is anything above 80% TPS. During which the AC cuts off as well.

Monitoring fuel psi is looking good.

During this i swapped to a new sending unit that does much better at the fuel levels. A fresh fill allowed me to map/measure what the gauge means for fuel amount. When you drive like a fool getting 5mpg, this matters a lot.

I started tooking at the install of a cadilac CTSV shifter. The perk here is i will have bump shifting. The con is i have to cut my tunnel, or raise up the shifter, which is tall enough already.

Shifter + console + radio is my next big challenge.

I redid my jeep hard top removal scheme. I put an ATV winch in the attic versus using pullies and my jeep's bumper winch. The atv winch comes out after each job. Only do it twice a year, but can do it faster and safer now.

Put some tire skeet on my fleet of ashy tires. Prin would be proud.

YAY a post about car stuff!!!

I actually replaced the dry rotted 27 year old door window trim on my Lightning this weekend, tightened the loose shifter linkage, and installed a bracket that I've had sitting around for 11 years to fix the dash rattle. It's amazing what those little things did for looks, drive ability, and less annoying rattles! 8)

Had a friend of mine rebuild my transmission (ran a transmission shop for 10 years) at the end of last summer after I broke the intermediate sprag and got everything back in and installed over winter along with some other stuff. Went to go for a test drive last weekend and trans would go into gear and nudge the truck but no reverse and no forward gears. Trans had to come back out. Decided to do the tear down myself and found this:

Looks like the OD pressure plate snap ring was missing which caused some fukery and for the OD sprag to not sit correct (sits right behind this piece) which explains my symptoms. $30 fix or whatever and mistakes happen, but cant get my 15 year friend to message me back or return my calls, kind of a bummer because I value his friendship more than a transmission im not that upset over. Hopefully have the parts tomorrow to throw it back together and get it reinstalled sometime this next week.

It's 2020, ZZ. Open your mind to the new world. Gays can get married, the Chicoms are taking over the world, and BMW station wagons can be hotrods AND parts getters. Some of them.

I mean, it makes more power and is faster than most mustangs and camaros from 1980-2002.
